Why wood?
Wood and Global Warming?

When fuels burn they release carbon dioxide, which is the greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. Burning fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas pumps carbon dioxide from the earth’s “centre” into the atmosphere…a one-way trip. Trees however, absorb carbon dioxide as they grow. So when wood burns, the carbon dioxide that is released will be absorbed again by young trees. Because trees recycle carbon dioxide, wood burning just warms you, not the globe. Combined with responsible forestry practices, we can ensure that our local woodlands contribute most significantly to the health of our environment.

Storing Firewood

Well seasoned firewood will be ruined by improper storage. Exposed to rain or snow, wood will reabsorb large amounts of moisture, making it unfit to burn and/or causing it to rot. Wood should be stored off the ground with just the top covered leaving the sides exposed to the drying effects of the sun and the wind. You never want to create a “greenhouse effect”, trapping the moisture under a tarp or plastic wrap.
Seasoned Wood

All firewood contains water. Freshly cut wood can be up to 45% water, while well-seasoned firewood generally has a 20–25 percent moisture content. Well-seasoned firewood is easier to start, produces more heat, and burns cleaner. The most important thing to remember is that the water must be gone before the wood will burn efficiently.
